"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy
word is truth" [words of
Jesus] (John 17:17).
If
God's Word has ever been true, it's still true!
We
can't customize the Word of God to suit our lives and it remain
true. When we attempt to justify actions contrary to God's will by
taking Scripture out of context or twisting its meaning, or just
plain ignoring it, it
instantly loses its authenticity for us; it is no longer true in our
lives.
Compartmented Bible quotes can be misused and an attempt can be made
to apply it to individual unrelated situations; that doesn't change
the original meaning. God's Word is "forever settled in heaven"
(Psalm 119:89). To put it in the vernacular -- it is
"written in
stone." (Remember the Ten Commandments?)
Our
responsibility is to conform to God's Word and the truths it teaches
not customize it to our liking, and we can then show by example
truths that God wants the world to know.
Have
you noticed that a package of what used to be a "pound" of bacon now
has much less? Do you remember when you didn't need to check the
weight/volume of food you regularly bought? The label on what used to
be a "pound" of coffee now reads "11 ounces." This pattern is repeated
in all the grocery aisles.
If a
carpenter needs a board six feet long, anything less than that won't
measure up. If a plumber needs a cutoff valve, a straight pipe
won't do. If a chef is making his special chicken casserole, a
serving of beef will not work in his recipe.
A
foot is twelve inches. There are 5,280 feet in a mile. An acre is
equivalent to 43,560 square feet. Can you imagine what would happen
to the measurement of a mile or an acre if someone decided that a
foot should be ten and a half inches instead of the standard twelve
inches? They would be all out of kilter as would anything else
not using
the correct basis of "a foot equals twelve inches."
Maybe
you haven't noticed, but that is exactly how the devil operates.
When we are about to deviate from God's will (His standard), an evil
whisper says, "God will understand. He loves you and will not mind
if you make this adjustment just once. Go ahead." How many
alcoholics began with just one drink? How terribly sad that the
young person who makes good grades, is obedient to his/her parents
just "shoots up" one time, and it leads to an addiction that
controls their every waking moment--or death..
Every
downward path began with one step away from the truth: "Just once
I'll do this and never again." In the beginning, we feel some guilt
if it is contrary to what we know is right because God has said it
in His Word and the Holy Spirit checks us; but every inch we slip
into agreement with the devil's suggestions is an endless-measure
slide downhill that can only be halted by repentance and
restoration. After the "fun" wears off, the consequences set in.
How
wonderful it is, how blessed we are to have such a loving and
forgiving Savior. When we come back to Him with contrition, His
arms are open wide to receive us, forgive and restore! The gravity
of our sin may be so heavy on us that we think God would never take
us back, but again--the devil lies! Satan was defeated when our
Lord went to Calvary, shed His precious blood and rose from the dead
to totally cleanse us as we "lay aside every weight, and the sin
which doth easily beset us" (Hebrews 12:1). He awaits us at the
cross, enfolds us in His love and wipes the slate clean, never to be
remember by Him again. That's His Standard!
He
made us an "absolute" promise that we can depend on; His word is
true:
"For
I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and
their iniquities will I remember no more" (Hebrews 8:12).
"Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and
HOLD FAST..." (Revelation 3:3) [Emphasis mine].
Let
us cling to Truth! God's Standard--His Word--is settled; it is
absolute; it is always true. Let us follow it faithfully, not
attempting to customize it to our finite minds and desires but
adhering to God's infinite wisdom. When we err, let us quickly
return to the Truth which will never deviate to man's adjustments,
but will always bring us back to the Absolutely Absolute Truth God
has given us for our very own good and eternal benefits. They truly
are "out of this world" and await our arrival!
What
a blessed promise we have in the Absolutely Absolute Truth! Beyond our
comprehension!
God
IS Love!
