“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be praised among the nations, I will be praised in the earth.  Jehovah of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.  Selah” (Psalm 46:10).

Recently while on a plane trip, our pilot made an announcement that our plane would be flying in a “holding patter” because of bad weather below.  The experts who were directing airline traffic had to make sure that our plane was able to land safely, so they had us wait until conditions were better below.  Although we couldn’t see what was happening below the clouds we had to trust the experts.

In a “holding pattern” all a pilot does is fly at a reduced speed and circle the area until it is safe to land.  I have often felt like I was in a “holding pattern” spiritually.  I knew that after prayer I had heard from God, but I had to stand still for a little while before I received the answer to my prayer.

Being in a spiritual holding pattern is pretty hard, because we want things done instantly; and we want to know and see everything that is going on.  It surely is a time of trust, but we know that God is working things out for us.  As we had to trust the experts that knew what was happening below us, we have to trust the greatest expert, God.  He is working things out for our good, but he may have to deal with other people.  We know that people do not always listen and obey His voice the first that He speaks.

We can trust our expert (God) with all things in our life, because we know that He is working in the storms of our life and is taking care of everything that we can’t see.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his promise” (Romans 8:28).

“Lord, as we stand still and wait on you to work on these storms of our life, help us to trust your grace and love for us.  Help us not to get ahead of your Spirit.  Please give us peace when we are in a spiritual “holding pattern.”  Thank you that you always work all things for our good!”

“Be strong and of good courage.  For you shall divide for an inheritance to this people, the land which I swore to their fathers, to give it to them.  Only be strong and very courageous so that you may be careful to do according to all the Law and my servant Moses commanded you.  Do not turn from it to the right or to the left that mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:6, 7).

A Shelter in the Time of Storm

Ira D. Sankey

The Lord's our Rock, in Him we hide,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm.

A shade by day, defense by night,
A shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes afright,
A shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm.

The raging storms may round us beat,
A shelter in the time of storm
We'll never leave our safe retreat,
A shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm.

O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our helper ever near,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm.
